Khalas Dates: The Golden Butter-Toffee Date Served with Arabic Coffee
Khalas dates are among the most prized date varieties of the Arabian Peninsula, grown in the historic oases of Al-Ahsa, Qassim and Al-Kharj. Celebrated for their warm amber colour, thin tender skin and mellow butter-toffee sweetness, they are the classic everyday companion to cardamom-spiced Arabic coffee.
From the Oases of Al-Ahsa and Qassim to Every Majlis
In Arabic, the word 'khalas' translates roughly to 'the quintessence' or 'the finest extract' – a fitting name for the date variety most frequently set before guests in homes across Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. Flourishing in the palm groves of Al-Ahsa, Qassim and Al-Kharj, Khalas dates are enjoyed both at the soft, fresh mid-ripe stage (rutab) and as cured, vacuum-pressed amber dates (tamr) year-round.
Velvety Texture and Mellow Butterscotch Flavour
Unlike giant Medjool dates with their intense honey punch or crisp Sukkari dates, Khalas dates are medium-sized, bite-friendly and remarkably balanced. Their translucent golden-brown skin clings smoothly to the plush, fudgy flesh, delivering notes of warm butterscotch, soft caramel and browned butter without ever feeling overly sugary.
The Classic Partner for Arabic Coffee and Tahini
Whenever a brass dallah of blonde Arabic coffee scented with cardamom and saffron is poured, a bowl of Khalas dates sits beside the small finjan cups: the gentle toffee sweetness of the date balances the herbal briskness of the unsweetened coffee. For Ramadan iftar or winter evenings, Khalas dates are also drizzled with runny tahini or warm ghee and toasted sesame seeds.
