What are Ajwa dates? The dark, mild dates of Medina

Ajwa dates are a heritage variety grown in the palm groves of Medina in Saudi Arabia, easily identified by their small, rounded shape and near-black skin etched with fine golden lines. They have a firm, meaty texture and a much gentler sweetness than Medjool or Sukkari dates.

How to recognise Ajwa dates by look and taste

Unlike long, tapered dates, an Ajwa date is short and plump, almost plum-shaped, with a deep burgundy-black skin and delicate pale wrinkles. The flesh inside is dense and chewy rather than syrupy, so the dates stay neat and dry to the touch. On the palate, Ajwa dates are subtly sweet with mellow notes reminiscent of dried prunes, liquorice and warm spice.

Serving Ajwa dates in Ramadan and gifting

Because of their deep cultural and traditional significance in Muslim households, Ajwa dates are especially sought after during Ramadan for breaking the fast at sunset with water or milk, or for eating in the morning alongside Arabic coffee. They are also a classic gift box to bring when visiting family and elders during Ramadan and Eid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Ajwa dates the same as the "ajwa" date paste used in baking?
No. In Egypt and the Levant, smooth baking date paste for maamoul cookies is colloquially called "ajwa", whereas Medina Ajwa dates are whole, dark, pitted-on-the-tree fruits.
How sweet are Ajwa dates compared with Medjool or Sukkari?
Ajwa dates are noticeably less sweet than both Sukkari and Medjool, making them popular with people who prefer a mild, understated date.
How should Ajwa dates be stored?
Keep them in their sealed container in a cool, dry cupboard or in the refrigerator so they retain their firm-tender bite.
